The prices I've seen for lightly circulated 1971 $1 coins are like three bucks. Not exactly blowing the doors off. What does it actually take for a first year Ike to be considered worthwhile?
You sort of just answered your own question when you said " circulated" are worth $3. As the article above indicates, circulated are common but high grade uncirculated are hard to come by. I would say MS-65 and above for all 1971 and 1972 dated coins. I'm sure that JBuck can expand on this.
Jbuck, I remember when they came out. I was only 9 but had recently gotten interested in coins. However, my fascination was with "old stuff", not these big new clunkers.

My implication is you did not take the class. I get it, Morgan 101, Barber 101, and other classes were more popular then.
