I posted this a long time ago with no conclusive results how this could have happened. Lincoln's head is shattered with pieces scattered but still intact - nose, chin, back of head, etc.. Like puzzle pieces that can be rearranged again. What process can cause it to shattered but still remain attached to the coin? Minting error or post mint damage? Thanks for any comments.

Wow that is one nasty customer! I agree with damage on this one.
Pics below are of my 1911 "fuse box coin". That's one possible way to explain
the damage to your coin. Extreme, high heat!

For me, the flattening on the rev of the design elements and the rim point toward this being damage. I just don't see how it could have been struck like this.
