Phineas Taylor "PT" Barnum will forever be linked to the Barnum & Bailey Circus - "The Greatest Show on Earth" - but the circus is not why he was selected for the 1936 Bridgeport, Connecticut Centennial Half Dollar.

Barnum was selected for his other contributions to the City.

Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross stated at the time of the coin's development: "Sponsors of the Bridgeport coin emphasized that they desire to pay honor to Barnum not because of his connection with the circus but because of his philanthropic and civic contributions as a citizen of Bridgeport."

Among these contributions:

- He was a major benefactor of Tufts University. Some of his financial (and other) contributions helped establish the University's Museum of Natural History in 1884 (it housed a collection of deceased animal specimens and oddities that were once part of Barnum's circus). The Museum operated until 1975 when it was ravaged by an all-consuming fire.

- Barnum paid for the construction of the Barnum Institute of Science and History (later Barnum Museum) in Bridgeport. Its collections focus on the history of Bridgeport, CT and Barnum. The museum continues to operate to the present day. (For more, see: Barnum Museum.

- Barnum was a significant donor to the fundraising drive to support construction of the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty that was to be erected in New York harbor.

- He helped fund school construction in Bridgeport.

- Barnum donated land to Bridgeport that was used to create the city's Seaside Park.

From a civic contributions perspective:

- Barnum served as the Mayor of Bridgeport in 1875.

- While in office, he actively worked to "clean up" the City through enforcement of liquor laws and cracking down on prostitution/brothels.

- He also pushed multiple urban infrastructure projects such as those for clean water systems and street lights.

- Barnum was a key player in the establishment of Bridgeport Hospital and served as its first president.

Sometimes, the "Greatest Show" is about more than just entertainment! Barnum was a very successful "showman", but he used his wealth to benefit others (while, admittedly, promoting himself).
