My favorite is the peony,something about watching the ants work in the early spring to help the bud open reminds me of childhood.  but since it was already taken, which I noticed after I posted I will go the bleeding heart...

I've always been partial to Portulacca -- they give a nice ground coverage, the flowers come in various colors, and a cool thing about them is that they close up at night.
