Crazy story on this one: It was in the "Error Coin" section from the GC auction last Sunday. The pictures showed white spots on the coin but I figured if I got it for cheap enough I would crack it out of its ICG slab and give it a Verdi-Care treatment. Well first part worked out great - won it with a $29 bid. The second part of my plan also worked out great........the cent cleaned up beautifully with the Verdi-Care treatment.........has a bit of a "woody" effect on the obverse. So with all that said what do you think it will grade as.............. Before and after photos.........

I'll take a stab in the dark and say XF. The reverse looks much better, nice improvement!

I'll say VF. Probably close to XF almost.
Errers and Varietys.

Nice cleanup! See what you mean by the hint of woodiness, given the obverse parallel lines. I'll say high VF.

It always surprises me the condition in which some submit coins for grading. This was a simple, probably <5 minute conservation, for a dramatic difference. NICE JOB!
The coin appears to be damaged to me. That is not wood graining, it looks to me like the patina was physically rubbed off of some places from abrasive contact. The obverse suffered some deep field hits/damage.

I'm in the VF+ circle. I do see legit woody characteristics. I've seen similar over many decades of gathering and hoarding wheat cents.

Interesting, I have great respect for ICG too. I suppose it could be a lamination but I don't see it in the pictures.

The patch on the left side definitely looks like a lamination in the GC picture. A tapering rough patch that goes all the way to the rim.

Quote: I'm guessing ICG called the bad alloy mix a "Lamination"? No surprise there, there are often discrepancies with their attributions.
