Hi, This is my first time posting, so forgive any mistakes or inexperience in terminology. My wife and I inherited a Whitman blue book series of Lincoln cents from her uncle, who passed in the late 80s. It was a pretty complete set, missing the 1909 S, 1909 S VDB, 1922 no D, and 1931 S. I didn't pay much attention to this set until last year. My question has to do with the 1914 D that is in the set. It's been damaged (probably that way since he got it). I think without the damage it would probably grade VG to F. Is that accurate? I also would like to know if you think it's authentic. The mint mark looks suspicious to me. I've posted four photos. Thanks for your help.

to the CCF The significant damage precludes a straight grade, although it appears to be worn to the ~VG level of preservation. I don't have the expertise to comment on authenticity. The mint mark shape and position relative to the date are key diagnostics. It would be helpful to our experts if you can show close up photos of that area.

the coin would not receive a grade due to the damage, the MM does not appear to match any of the known obv dies unless its damaged

The MM does not look correct at all.

Thanks for all the reply. One quick question (hope it's not too silly): does the mint mark ever move?

MM were manually placed on the dies and once added, that is the final location. So, yes, MM will be in different locations depending of the die.

So, yes, MM will be in different locations depending of the die. And sometimes circulation hits will move the mintmark metal but you should be able to tell that it would be close enough to the correct position to be verified.

I'm thinking genuine (Marve's #3) with some flattening and slight displacement due to circulation hits and wear.

looks like minor damage to the bottom serif of the MM.
die#3
i think its legit but you have to remember its a filler and really doesn't have collector value due to the extensive damage
