Not many are talking about this Numismatic event. Amos Press has sold its ANACS division. The people who print the Red Book are the buyers. What effect, if any, do you think this sale will have on the slab market.? catman

Amos Press also got rid of their coin forum. Does anyone know what is going on with their retreat from the coin hobby? Looks like a change of direction to me!

I think ANACS is a good grading Co. for the most part...I don't see over graded coins like some slabbs and I hope this will not change with them selling... I think it will be sometime before the ANACS slabs sell for as much as NGC or PCGS slabs just because people think PCGS and NGC are the ONLY Co...

See ND's post answer about tne MS70 64 Lincoln. He says it all when he says each coin dictates what TPG it goes to. I agree! ND has a boat load of knowledge and shares it freely! As Susan says, he's our "Big Guy" right here on this forum! Mike

Thanks Mike. Amos Press is a large corporation that is involved in many things, and Anacs was basically a losing situation for them. Our hobby is really rolling along with the aid of a small group. The average age coupled with a relatively small core group puts the handwriting on the wall. All of the grading companies cater to the die hard group of dealers and collectors. The concept of grading just doesn't make sense to most people. This isn't the first time that Anacs has been sold, and I will be very surprised if others aren't following suit in the future. http://www.collect.com/interest/art...asp?id=13646

Love them or hate them ANACS is a TPG that grades problem coins. When you collect coins that are at least 140 years old as I do, it's tough to find unmolested coins in many of the earlier types. I'm old enough to remember when bright and shiny was best. You got to believe that many of these coins were cleaned 30 or 40 years ago! As SFDukie said in an earlier post...I’d take an AU details Net EF40, lightly cleaned if it looks good and the price was fair. I hope the new owners don't turn them into PCGS/NGC types! Mike

Anacs will also grade the varieties that the others won't touch. Their research department is among the very best. While their values don't reach the levels of some, if you have an off the wall variety nothing else comes close. They are also the absolute best when it comes to spotting quality counterfeits. I hope with this sale that their level of quality doesn't suffer.

I spoke to an employee at ANACS yesterday on an unrelated matter and asked how he thought the sale would effect the company. He said they were told most changes would be invisible to the consumer except for the expansion of some services. I love ANACS because you can often talk to "coin people" when you call rather than an operator or automated service. I think they are much more fairly priced then PCGS or NGC and much faster for less money. I would however be willing to pay a few dollars more for a little better slab! And I concur with ND, they don't miss a thing! Everybody talks about PCGS AND NGC being so tough. I think ANACS is very consevitive when assigning grades, particularly if you get lucky enough to earn just a Market grade! My insomnia is doing well!!! mike

I have also had a few conversations with some at Anacs and while everyone is hoping for a smooth transition and no noticable changes, I know how things work. When Bowers and Merena were sold the same statements were made. New bosses make new rules. This is one that we will just have to wait and see.

To add my Two Cents (no pun intended). I have liked ANACS for quite sometime and is the only slabbing company I use. If I purchase a coin from another company and want to keep it slabbed I will send it in to ANACS for regrading and slabbing or I will just break the coin out and keep it raw. catman
