Found 2 Franklins in a Kennedy Roll yesterday, one a 1957-d and one
a 1958-d, was pleasantly surprised as it was my first "different coin" found in a roll. On a closer look my 1958 had a neat Cud under the chin!

Nice find, however a Cud includes the rim where the die has broken away. You have a die break/chip. Very nice.

Very cool find! This is a much more obvious error than the famous "Bugs Bunny" variety for the 1955 Franklin. I can't remember whether that was caused by clashing or chipping of the die.

Presumably other 1958-D coins were struck with this chipped die. They could be called "Goatee Benjamins" and you get the credit for the discovery!

Thanks for the comments guys, and you got me to thinking.
I am very happy with my find and it most likely being a diebreak.
I put it on here to share it and see if anyone had a simular one, because I hadn't seen any and I wasn't very familiar with Franklins.
But if it was a clash, the only thing I could see was maybe the chin being a part of the upside down Liberty bell edge...
So I got into my trusty photo software and this is what I came up with, ....there are three areas that match and are outlined on the obverse in black,
the chin
the neck below (vertical)line, isn't visible on "normal" Franklins
and the 1 in the date ( two dots on each side of line)(also marked on the reverse pic)
The only problem being, ITS OFF CENTER AND THE REVERSE ON MY COIN IS
JUST FINE!
DANG, Waste of time or can that even happen
here are the pics ( hope they come thru)

Any thoughts?

The problem with that theory is that clashes don't go that deep into the die to make it appear that tall. If it did all other areas of the reverse would be present? More like a die dent to me. Something may have been struck through a coin that created this.

wow, a die dent?,what exactly is that? I am new to errors/varieties, so please excuse. However I did read that clashes will show best on plain/low fields, I just really dont know if they could be off center, and have a centered coin. I'm confused!

This is not a clash and it is not a die dent. It's a simple die chip. It doesn't add any real value to the coin unless you find someone who especially collects these and really wants this one enough to add some money to the price to get it...most likely not going to happen.

A die dent is damage to the die that leaves a dent in the die which comes out as a hump on the resulting coins. The problem with this being a die dent is that it is too high in relief. Die dents are always shallow and indistinct.
