Here's a little something that I found that might answer your question; "When all around us there is turmoil in the world, Americans are caught up in the fight over 'In God We Trust'. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States was the first to be attacked for it's use of 'under God'. Those words were added to the Pledge during the 1950's. Also during the 1950's, the phrase 'so help me God' was added to the oaths of office for justices and judges. Our money, which bears the words 'In God We Trust' has also come under attack. 'E Pluribus Unum', standing for "Out of Many, One", was used on our currency until 1956. Congress then passed a law to replace it with the words, "In God We Trust". It was first used on paper money in 1957".
