I found a newly listed 1816 Large Cent today that has that circulated cameo look that I thought would accent my type coin set. It opened at $17.50. [eBayItem]140421969722[/eBayItem]
Shipping was $3.75 so I decided to bid $18.25 hoping nobody else would bid and I would get it for a total of an even $22.00.
When I typed in 18.75 and hit place bid, it said that I had WON the item and to pay now.
This is too weird. I never had this happen to me before and for the sake of a few dollars I am not going to cry about it but I am used to having that second page come up when I use Buy it Now to make sure that I am committing to buy the item. Not this time.
It was sold and ebay wanted the payment. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they can set a threshold where the item can sell instantly if it hits it. Though I would never do it, personally...
Rest in Peace

Um wheezy... it says you paid $25.00 with buy it now so $28.75 total, you must have hit buy rather than bid.

Yeah it would seem so. I paid right away because it was a done deal but I thought that I had a second page that said commit to buy after using a buy now button. Anyways, lesson learned is BE CAREFUL what button you hit when you place a bid I guess. Just thought I did hit bid not buy after typing in the amount. Glad it wasn't a lot more money. I paid enough for the coin but not a horrible mistake. I kinda like it.

Another thing I may have done was put the decimal point in the wrong place like TenSense says and I actually bid 187.50. Maybe that kicked it into the sold mode.

There is not a "threshold" that can trigger an complete an auction. There may be a reserve threshold than be crossed to make a bid valid, but the auction doesn't end.
