This is a good one to see what he thinks since we all have such varied opinions about it. I was just razing TLS5933 and he knows it. Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 08/14/2006 5:29 pm I agree its a MS coin I just dont know how high a MS coin it is because like I said if it had a strong strike and without them spots it would probably be a 65 or so because of the lack of marks but with the weak strike it has its impossible for me to grade this thing because only thing I know to take off for are the spots and am not sure how many points to detract for that Report this Post to the Staff
SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 08/14/2006 5:43 pm My point here is, the wear pattern on my coin is identical to the one on Metalman's, and only a little stronger. His 1888-O is an MS coin. I think 63, because that's about the highest grade a coin of that strike should receive. I believe mine would have been a strong 65 but for the strike. Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 08/14/2006 6:15 pm Hi dave I agree that your coin on the obverse is very similar in strike to mine,, but the Reverse is quite a bit better,, I placed my coin at a 62 in my own mind. I appreciate your example it was very helpul with this coin ,, I'm considering sending it off for a TPG opinion, probly Anacs . This is a very nice coin but, I don't see it as having the Weak Strike as much as Metalmans. This is going to take some serious practice with the Morgans for me. Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 08/15/2006 01:08 am well MS just means Mint State, which means it has the same amount of luster/detail that it had when it left the mint, so the spots/marks doesn't keep it from being a MS coin because it does in fact still have the features I mentioned. it will drop the grade down but it is still considered a MS coin Report this Post to the Staff
Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 08/15/2006 01:41 am Hi Debbie Here are a couple of good books !! the PCGS grading and counterfiet detection guide, and also the ANA grading standards for United States coins,, These books may help you with the MS standards of the Morgan dollar as well as other US coins. dsking Pillar of the Community United States 2365 Posts	Posted 08/15/2006 09:56 am Rick...I have the ANA Grading Book but, I try to grade without it sometimes and go by memory. So much for my memory! lol It has been exlained to me that the weak strikes don't necessarily effect the grade on Morgans which I was under the wrong assumption that it does, nor apparently do the marks. It's primarily the luster (as Bryan and TLS5933 has explained) that has more impact on the grade. I understand now (I hope). Yes Bryan I know what MS stands for. Thanks all! Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 08/15/2006 10:19 am one thing to remember, if it has the luster and detail it left the mint with then no matter how many hits or anything else it has the lowest grade it can receive is a MS-60 (unless something is so bad that it is net graded, and if thats the case then PCGS and NGC will bodybag it because they do not net grade). And you are correct, a wek strike doesn't affect the grade of a Morgan at all (not sure of other series) Edited by Bryan1315 08/15/2006 10:21 am Report this Post to the Staff
