Everybody has opinions on that.My list would be a Fisher F2, Whites Coinmaster Pro or Garrett Ace 250.

I like whites ...

But I know a lot of people like starting out on the Garret ACE 250. And now there is a new ACE 350.

I think all the major brands have a good starting detector

I would think that you can get a used ACE 250 used for that amount.

I agree with Goldrush. I bought my first detector 3 yrs ago. It was a used Whites prizm IV I got for 100 bucks. It paid for itself the first year when I dug over 100 bucks in clad. I bought a used Whites DFX a year later for $800 but ended up selling it because I was too impatient to learn the machine and went back to my trusty prizm IV. My father in law got an Ace 250 for a little over $200 new. You cant go wrong with a Whites or a Garrett.

I would never say anything bad about the Ace250. You can find a new one for about $215. That's what I paid in August. I almost paid for mine in a little over 3 months. I know nothing about those other brands but I sure do like this one. Eventually, I will move up to their new AT Pro! Good luck in your decision. Metal detecting is a BLAST!

Stay away from the ace 250 unless you want to get surface finds only. Buy a used Minelab. Can't be beat!
