How do you get close enough to show doubling on coins ? Are these shot thru a magnifying glass or something?

You need a digital camera with a macro setting, highest optical zoom you can get, and a tripod or stand. Without the tripod or stand, you will almost always have blurry pics. Also, a QX5 microscope that attaches to your computer works quite well. QX5s are "kids toys" that are sold at Toys R Us and other toy stores. It may be advertised as a toy, but several people on this forum use them and get wonderful pics.

I use a QX3 - I paid $60 for it on ebay.

Here is an example of what it can do:

so I could simply buy the QX5 and set the coin within it and achieve the same results?

or

These are really used to magnify the image only for more specific shots?

I have been trying to locate the QX5 for some time and they are always "out of stock". At least in my area they are hot sellers. I see them on ebay but they sell used for more than new.

I finally bought a digital camera and shoot through the lense. So far I do it hand held (I don't own a tripod) but they come out OK.

This is just a strike doubled cent with a die chip.

I've seen shots using a digital camera, macro setting, and shot through a loupe, yielding some great results. The entire setup has to be steadied, however. You really need a tripod or a copy stand to get crisp pics of doubling or other tiny details.

You will not get a picture of the whole coin if that is what you mean. On the QX3 (Which is probably similar to the QX5) I only use the 60x setting...The 10x and 200x are too fuzzy to see anything.

If I can't get close enough with the camera....

Getting-Close-UPS-?

....I can with the QX5.

The lens barrel of the camera was actually touching the bottom of the coin for that shot. I had to tilt the coin to get any light in at all.
