Finally found a place I can ask questions about coins and not feel like I'm an intruder(long story).
I found this is my till at work (exchanged with permission) I would like to know if this is a proof, books are not working for me and I love to share.
So if anyone could fill me in on this 1981 S Dime I would be very grateful.

yes this is a proof. It has the S mintmark, which means it was minted in San Francisco (where proofs are made), and it has the mirror-like background that proofs have. Someone must have broken it out of a 1981 proof set and spent it.

Very nice!

I think any proof found in circulation is a good find. Your pulling it will keep it from getting worse.

Was sad to see all the finger prints on it. But that's ok, I am tickled with my find.

Great find ... Proof indeed.

There were 4.06 million clad proof dimes minted in 1981 ... and you have one of them.

Welcome
Very Nice find!! Take a close look at the S mint mark on your 81 proof dime.
It either a type 1 or type 2. You can find more information on this here http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page29.html I've received some nice help trying to distinguish one from the other, Theirs some great prior threads here on CCF, Just search CCF for 81 Type 2 and that should also give some examples. Good Luck!

It should. Silver proof S-mint dimes were not made until 1992.
