I have been in the possession of this coin for quite a few years now and there is something about it which has stopped me selling it as an unidentified coin as to me its rather unusual. The coin itself is very worn, it has a nice green patina. I haven't a clue where to start with ID'ing this however hopefully one of you knowledgeable bunch might recognize the funny shape bust facing right with an "O" in front of it. The coin shows more detail in hand than the pictures so what I have done is annotated two pictures showing the raised surfaces which can be seen clearly in hand. The reverse of the coin looks what I believe is Britannia however I could be wrong, I can also see the letters "AI" in front of 'Brittanias' head. I understand if an precision ID is not possible as it is very very worn. Do you also reckon that it is Brittania on the reverse or have I got it the wrong way round? I am also thinking about soaking in a bit of olive oil for a few months to see if some of the dirt can be removed to expose the finer details. Report this Post to the Staff

I don't clean coins any more as I have only been disappointed in the coins I purchased and my patience with the process. Soaking it can't hurt, but I will be surprised if you will be able to tell much more about this coin afterwards. Good luck. Report this Post to the Staff

I reckon Jwharper is on the money here - a city commemorative piece with that city's personification on it. Britannia looked like Roma, Roma looks like Constantinopolis et cetera.
