DVCollector Bedrock of the Community United States 10045 Posts	Posted 12/27/2012 12:15 am I've seen weirdly toned/woodgrained coins from the 1870s, possibly due to the mint recycling earlier coins by re-melting them, and possibly including CuNi coins. That said, I find it a little odd how the heavily worn areas such as the cheek and ribbon are one even color. I would not be surprised if the coin was re-toned to hide cleaning or other damage.
