The diameter is 40 m.m. and it weighs 26.8 grams. Portions of the under coin are visible with a glass, but not enough to tell the type or date. The edge is mostly plain except for a small area that shows the circle and squares of an 8 Reales. * Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. * Report this Post to the Staff

The idea of leaving a trace of the under-type visible was intentional. Mathew Boulton came up with the idea that by adjusting the striking pressure he could leave a trace of the host coin to deter forgers. It really did not work because within a few weeks a forger had made dies which included a partial 8R design. As far as counterfeits go the ones with the 8R traces are fairly scarce and bring a premium from counterfeit collectors like myself. Report this Post to the Staff
