may I ask why 11 sides on the nickel and how many years did they use this shape?

Actually it's a twelve sided nickel.
This nickel was used from 1942 to 1962
when it was reverted back to a round nickel.
It's original purpose was to avoid confusion between the copper penny
and the tombac nickel which was introduced in 1942. Tombac tarnished to
a brown colour making it look similar to the penny.
