To me the coin appears to be just worn down over a long life time.

It was probably one of the 1922-D cents that the dies were over polished to finish out the run that year. They over worked them to the point that the mint mark was removed/partially removed that year. So with the over all weakness, I'm thinking 1922-D cent.
