References For Coin Size +/- Tolerances

Sagegirl Valued Member United States 207 Posts	Posted 02/19/2018 1:06 pm I have come across a couple of off sized coins so I started researching to find information on the +/- size tolerances for coins. I have used both the 1998 and the the new 2018 Red Book, I emailed the mint and they referred me to http://www. archives . gov, record group 104 and have read some of the 31 U.S. Code 5112 & 5113, plus numerous internet searches. The only tolerances I have been able to find is for weight. Are there any other reference books or a website I should be looking at as far as width and thickness tolerances? Sagegirl Valued Member United States 207 Posts	Posted 02/19/2018 5:15 pm John1, Thanks for that info, but it doesn't give the tolerances for diameter or thickness. For example a Nickle is .835" diam. and .077" thick. My 1988 D nickle is .827" diam. and .085" thick, which works out to .008 inches less in diameter and .008 inches thicker. I also measured another 5 test coins of different years with same mint mark, they ran .835 to .837 inches diam and .073 to .077 inches thick. Not concerned with value or anything, just curious, I put it in a flip and keep with my oddball coins. I don't have a scale to weigh anything....YET.... so I can't give any weight info.
