So, I'm wondering about this coin. It looks normal straight on.

The term your looking for is "ghosting".
Check the glossary for explanation.

Progressive Indirect Design Transfer (PIDT). Also refered to as ghosting.

Yep, Ghosting is often seen on "thinner" coins - Most common denomination I have seen it on is the 3 cent piece.

Very interesting, and it apparently occurred often on 1946 S LWC. Its odd that I hadn't noticed this before.

Good eye! ! I wouldn't necessarily say they often occur on a 46-S. For me, I've seen them most on LWC.
