Fully1975 New Member United Kingdom 2 Posts	Posted 04/07/2019 11:28 am Hi All, I have been collecting coins since my grandfather brought roman coins home from Austria during WW2. I am now the proud owner of those. My question relates to an 1818 Sovereign I recently acquired. I own several sovereigns but this is the first time I have a small doubt on its authenticity. It weighs 7.80g. It's diameter is 22.02mm. It's thickness is 1.38mm. It has also passed the magnet test, a close inspection definitely tells me it is 22ct gold. oriole Pillar of the Community Canada 5267 Posts	Posted 04/07/2019 2:07 pm Sovereigns should weigh 7.98 grams, unless it has very heavy wear. The weight would have been very strictly controlled. You cannot determine if something is 22 Karat gold from a visual check. I would be suspicious at the very least. Please post good pictures of both sides-that might help. Report this Post to the Staff

JaseMcNotty New Member Ireland 17 Posts	Posted 04/08/2019 1:16 pm Steve I'm no expert but if your only concern is the weight, i'd go with genuine at this point. 7.80g is less than 2.5% loss on a 200 year old coin showing considerable wear. Obverse isn't sending me any warning signs. If it's real, it's a Marsh 2A: "Ascending colon after BRITANNIAR, clear space between REX and F:D:" Report this Post to the Staff

JaseMcNotty New Member Ireland 17 Posts	Posted 04/09/2019 09:19 am I'd also guess that the uneven wear and polishing/toning when comparing the legend to the edge and devices could be because the coin was part of a ring or pendant. If the fitting had any "play" in it at all, this might have caused more material to be lost over time than regular currency use. Report this Post to the Staff
