@gavin, the bubbling on the back of George's neck is from exposure to high heat. We sometimes call these "campfire coins", but any of a variety of means could have been used to cause this effect.

I agree with Spence... your quarter is the victim of a harsh heat/fire event, not a defective planchet, just PMD.
