Spanish Coin Or Token? | Spain 5 Centimos 1870 Om

MArainman Valued Member United States 104 Posts	Posted 02/20/2009 1:39 pm Here's a good one. I got this coin in an "unsorted" world coin lot on ebay. Diameter is 25mm. Coin alignment. Feels and sounds like copper. One side has a lion and a shield with "DOSCIENTAS PIEZAS EN KILOG" around the top, "CINCO CENTIMOS" around the bottom and a mintmark of "OM" under the lion. Other side has a seated woman with "CINCO GRAMOS" around the top and a date of what appears to be 1870 on the bottom. In very small type under the woman is the name "L. MARCHIONNI". Any ideas? While it is unusual on a coin this late, on many earlier European coins, the only indication of which country a coin "belongs to" is the coat of arms or ruler's monogram. In this case, the Spanish coat of arms can be clearly seen on the shield being held by the lion. At least, it would have been clearly seen if it hadn't been worn away.
