I like the African notes from the French Colonial period for the artistry - here is one of the same era as many that were posted in this thread but from and island north of South America in the Caribbean. Martinique P32 (1947-49) - I call it VG.

Here's an Africa note that meets the original theme of this post - expensive and not 'that old'. I like the obverse with the leopard. Italian Somaliland, P16, 1951, 5 Somali.

As I wrote earlier, any Italian __, French ___, German __ or British ___ former colony gets a lot of attention. Lots of collectors out there want an old classic note with the image of a leopard on it so the 5 Somali is a tough yet big hit.
