Chester Greenwood Token - Coin Community Forum

Spence Moderator United States 34393 Posts	Posted 03/02/2026 8:40 pm If you have spent time this winter in the Northeast USA, you'll have noticed that its wicked cold out. See map below for what I'm talking about if you haven't spent time here--remember that the temps are in F not C. To help keep us all warm, I'm posting a token from the inventor of the improved ear muff: Chester Greenwood. You can read all about him here, but it seems the impetus for his invention was a combination of wanting to ice skate and being allergic to wool (such as would be used in a scarf). It is my understanding that he gave these tokens out to local kids in his town in Western Maine, "If you want the best get Greenwood's Ear Protectors for 25 cents everywhere." I'm not aware of a date on this token, but guess that it is from the beginning of the 20th Century. Please let me know if I've got any of this wrong. Thx!
