I've seen some outrageous fakes on ebay but this falls in a very special category. A $30,000 fake. Beyond that it is an absolutely terrible fake. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2866229759...e+%2410+1874For $30,000 I want a better fake than this. The seller must have been browsing Northern Nevada to set his price. Naturally there are no returns and the seller has no history. But this is the real prize: "This coin is uncertified, adding to its authenticity and appeal for collectors looking for unique and rare pieces." *** Edited by Staff to Add Year and/or Mintmark and/or Denomination to Title. It's essential to have it in the title. ***"Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." Fred Astaire

Not a very good looking counterfeit coin. Shipping is also 50.00 for this junk. I've seen much better looking fakes than this. Not impressed.

thq, I reported this fake UK 5 Pound 1839 Proof ($16,000) that has the word COPY on the back to no avail. ebay cares more about you assigning a grade to your coin than ensuring that it's real. 226825931251

ebay does not care anymore. It's a free-for-all, anything-goes, wild west show that PT Barnam wouldn't even be associated with!

Looks like they took a steel fake and colored part of it with a yellow magic marker.

I agree, I really DO love the seller's description. "This coin is uncertified, adding to its authenticity" That has to be one of the true ebay classics.

Quote:"This coin is uncertified, adding to its authenticity." That has to be one of the true ebay classics. That sounds like AI to me. One of my favorites is "Mint condition for its age." Like one has anything to do with the other.

Bobby, interesting you bring up "AI". Is it able to identify counterfeit coins yet?

Oh heck no.
The listing is gone, but a real person got the report.

I was hoping you'd show up Bobby.
No coin collector would fall for this. But my cats might. Or a middle schooler with access to PayPal.
thecoinguy, if you look on Reddit you'll find posts of super rare coins that AI has identified. To everyone else they look ordinary.
