What's the general consensus here? Will the two gold issues sell out? If so, how quickly? Finally from a purely investment standpoint, do you think they will ultimately prove to be a good purchase?
The gold and silver liberty bells are being released July 16. I think they are really cool but the premium is sky high, I won't be trying to get one. They will probably sell out, wealthy collectors getting them.
They're asking for, what, almost 5x bullion value as the initial retail price? It's very rare that a coin with such a huge premium does well on the secondary market. It's also rare that coins celebrating a specific event maintain their high value once the celebrations are done and forgotten. Let's look at it this way: did the 1976 bicentennial commemorative coins enjoy any kind of special premium right now, as the 250th anniversary came and went? I haven't noticed any such. So there's no reason to presume that these 250th coins will gain a sudden surge in value when the tricentennial rolls around in 2076, and not even a super-low mintage can counteract this.
Maybe I'll be proved wrong, and jingoism will win out over cold hard logic. But the fundamentals just don't look promising.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
I like the idea but I think the price ultimately hinders these. I will most likely never see one and definitely will not ever have the money to purchase one. In my mind thats a coin that doesn't exist. There are other coins that meet those criteria but they weren't minted specifically for that purpose so I find these a little different. It could have been a lot more fun.
I just got an email from Bullion Exchanges, they are offering $22,000 for the 1 oz gold bell, mint price is $19,600. BE is also offering more for the 1/2 oz gold and 1/2 silver ones but not as much. My luck if I tried to buy it to flip something would happen and BE would withdraw the offer LOL.
