When I was quarter hunting it seemed D had a more pronounced shine where P has a more satin finish.

I'm interested to see what others think, but as far as I know, there is no difference in finish between mints on circulation coins. Perhaps you live a little closer to the Denver mint as compared to the Philadelphia mint, so those quarters had passed through a few more hands by the time they got to you?

Same here. Some definitely seem to have a satin finish and it is not from circulation, to my eyes.
