Numismatically speaking, American coinage should never display a living President on our nation's coinage.

This. Period.
2026 is supposed to be about our nations Semiquincentennial. I think this is a obviously a political decision, and a divisive one at that, regardless if you support him or not.
Hopefully this does not get snuck into the SemiQ Proof Set.

Morgans Dad, Not a surprise, but not for the reason you were implying.

Not proficient enough with this to quote, but @Vector Ze I'm going to rely on the information actually on the USM site.

smuglr Believe what you choose, but there is no credible evidence these coins will be available for $1 apiece.

Apparently, my post has been removed. That's unfortunate. I efforted to be non-political, too. :^(

The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, introduced a formal rule under 31 U.S. Code § 5112 requiring a president to be deceased for at least two years before appearing on a coin.

In case anyone was wondering.

The little ad from the Mint that was posted states "released in to circulation", meaning face value.
The rolls and bags sold through the website will I'm sure carry a premium. Possibly the rolls and bags will be available through the federal reserve for face value as well.

ArrowsAndRays:

If you google: "What work-around allowed production of the Trump one dollar coin", the result describes the loophole in the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 that got past the 2005 law you've cited.

I would guess counterstamped versions will make their way to ebay not long after the rolls & bags ship out. . .and they won't be nearly as charming as Abe Lincoln smoking a pipe.

It's not really a work-around. This coin was not authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 §5112(n) which has the provision "No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President."

This coin was authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 §5112(y) which has no such provision. It also authorizes the quarter dollar youth sports quarters and Paralympic sport half dollars in 2027.

The secondary market may be active with this one: colorized, counterstamped, but hopefully not counterfeited.
