Some have asked about very worn coins and odd wear patterns--these are known as " Dryer Coins". They get stuck in a clothes dryer and become worn out.

The photo below illustrates how this large cent probably accumulated its weathering and wear by getting stuck on an early clothes dryer.

This is the cause of clothesline coinsEarly-American-Dryer-Coin! You can see where the coin would become lodged between the bracket and pulley and become worn in a fashion similar to later date Dryer Coins.
