I'm considering purchasing a collection that includes this coin in the 1856 Flying Eagle cent slot. These are the best photos the seller has provided so far, so unfortunately the image quality isn't great.

I know altered-date 1856 Flying Eagle cents are extremely common, particularly altered 1858s, so I'm assuming it is not genuine unless there are convincing diagnostics otherwise.

The 6 concerns me —t he positioning looks a little unusual to my eye. Before I completely write it off, though, I wanted to get opinions from members who know the series better than I do.

Based on what can be seen in these photos:

I realize nobody can definitively authenticate a coin from blurry photos, but I'd appreciate any observations before I decide whether it's worth pursuing further.

Thanks!

The example can not be authenticate from the photos, and a purchase would be a waste of money. From the photos it looks like a counterfeit. The font on the 5 in the date is different on the 56 and 58, but I can not tell anything from these blurry photos. On the reverse the serif on the N's look off. A strong pass.

This was one of those cases where I really wanted it to be true too. The pricing for the entire album was just too good, but the seller provided low quality photos in the listing, with no real images of the key dates. I'm still on the hunt.

Why did Whitman decided to put a hole in the IHC album for 1856 anyway? It's so obscure, no one would keep a quality raw example in it.

Definitely fake....good luck finding one!

Why would Whitman have a hole for the 1856? Whitman has been around much longer than any of the grading companies! I am certain that many 1856 FECs used to reside in folders. When the TPGs popped up, these coins migrated quickly into holders as there are so many counterfeits, such as the one posted above.

Yes, way back, someone who had the coin would be upset of there were not a place for it.

The 6 looks like it's on a different plain than the other numbers.
