While the Mint produces so many variants and commemoratives of its coins, it seems the BEP does not (I'll admit, I was hoping for some 250th anniversary bills).

Is there an official reason why we don't see these from the BEP?
I can imagine that either lack of authorization, or some legal reason (fear of counterfeits) might account for it, but I haven't found any official discussion of this.

Were there any such 'special' currency notes offered in the past?

good question--maybe it is easier to mass mint coins than it is to print currency--there is alot more detail in currency than there is in coins--

The closest I've seen to that is the back of the modern $2 which was done for the Bicentennial.

You could say that all the added marks, watermarks, mylar strips were to commemorate the fact that US currency was/is a huge target for counterfeiters...
