It's essential to have it in the title. ***Greetings gang, I'm a Boomer who had a small coin collection as a kid but never did much with it, I think my brother absconded with it when I went to L.A. after H.S. with my band. Not long ago I found a slab in a parking lot, and it turned out to be an 1879 double eagle. I read everything I could about the coin and became fascinated with the history and now I'm sort of hooked. I learned that it was a fairly common year and mint, probably VF40 or better but definitely cleaned from the many small scratches and the lifeless patina so I sold it a bit over spot. Now I'm able to buy more affordable coins that I really like. As a newbie I think I've already been burned. I love deep harvest toning and found a very affordable AU Morgan with great eye appeal. Now I wonder if it was toned... What do you guys think?

Thats an incredible story about the found Double Eagle. All of us would enjoy hearing more about that find - but in a separate post. Your example looks like natural toning. On Morgan's best to stay away from examples with scratches on Liberty's cheek. The scratch on the cheek hurts eye appeal and grading. The cheek is the prime grading area on Morgan silver dollars. The 1882 is a common date, so be selective when you buy as there are lots to choose from. If you are going to buy high end toners with eye appeal, best to stick to examples in a TPG from NGC, PCGS or CAC holders. Buying expensive raw toners is a easy way to get burnt. |

Whoever lost that slabbed gold is going to be missing it and wondering where it went for the remainder of his/her natural life. That dark Morgan looks like typical normal near end stage toning of silver. Some folks find it attractive; others, less so. Also, |

To CCF! Some sellers do intentionally tone coins artificially. Your coin appears to have natural toning. Nice Morgan dollar.  Errers and Varietys.

I remember a few years back a CCF member sold a Buffalo nickels on ebay and in just a few weeks later that same coin was toned and up for sale again on ebay. (Wish I could find that topic). Also another ebay seller claimed that his coins were stored many years in a wine cellar where they "took on this wonderful toning" So yes many do tone coins in hopes for higher bids. Be careful. |

Thank you all for weighing in on the Morgan. I paid $55 for it so I feel pretty good about the purchase regardless. Yes, whoever lost that double eagle is probably still searching for it and going absolutely insane! When I found it I didn't even want to look at it I just put it in my pocket immediately and just kept walking because I knew it was a coin and thought whoever lost might still be around looking for it right then.
