  My LCS got a collection and this item was labeled 1856 altered from 1858. I am assuming that this is true, and it certainly looks funky around the date, but I just want another opinion. I am also trying to figure out how this would be done-you would have to add and subtract material, and the top of the 6 looks OK to me. But then I have no experience in making such things! It came from an old dealer collection, and neither I nor the dealer who now has it now has any financial stake in this coin.

I agree with it being altered. You can see the tool
marks on the 6 and to the right of the 5 where the
metal has been pushed over.
Also the shape of the 6 is not correct.

I used images from PCGS to make a date comparison for the purported 1856 with genuine1856 and 1858 FECs. Besides the tooling of the 6, the 1 and 5 appear to be from an 1858 coin.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

OK, thanks, CCF! So part of the fakery process is pushing metal over and reshaping it into desired shape (or similar), which, although crooked, does take some talent. It is a shame it ruined an 1858 cent, as this would have been AU otherwise and a fairly desirable piece.

Aside from the 6 being the wrong shape, my first observation was that the upright of the 5 was not centered over the ball of the 5. Correct assumption is that it is indeed an altered 1858.

This is also very clearly the small letters variety, which was 1858 only. The A and M in AMERICA would be touching on a 1856.

The top of the 5 is much longer on a real 1856, in addition to the points noted. Because the fake was based on an 1858 small letters variety, I would assume this was not a sophisticated counterfeit. Maybe an album hole filler for an otherwise impossible coin to afford?

Thanks for the excellent analysis. It's good to be aware of multiple ways to spot fakes, and in this case, no harm was done to anyone's reputation or wallet.
There is probably not much than can be done with this coin, except add it to the altered date section of a fake collection.
