Most likely someone dropped / lost it in a field, and someone years later found it and spent it, now you can spend it

Your coin appears to have been left exposed to the elements for a considerable length of time.

Yes, LOTS of exposure and yet I found it in a roll of quarters I got from my bank today. An actual banker doing the rolling would have probably pulled it, but those days are long gone... Round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows.

Cupronickel can turn that colour, though it's not terribly common. Years ago I found a quarter underneath a break-room microwave that looked a lot like the one pictured.
