KisNap Pillar of the Community United States 500 Posts	Posted Yesterday 11:09 pm Picture yourself back in 1913 (that's the farthest I could get the inflation calculator to go back to) and you have a brand new red shiny Wheat cent, $0.31 today. Did anyone think to encapsulate it and save it for their great grandchildren thinking it might be worth over $100 later in numismatic value? It seems as time has gone on, more and more people collect and protect their old coins and the mint sells new mint sets in uncirculated, proof, reverse proof, and silver proof in the hundreds of thousands. Do you think our coins will ever be that valuable 113 years later or will there be so many well preserved examples that they will never appreciate? Ironically, many mint sets now sell below than what they were issued for at the time they were produced. Would saving a choice coin from the wild in mint-state condition and putting it aside for someone 113 years later be considered pointless? Just curious what everyone thinks about the hobby as a looong term investment that their descendants could cash in on. Report this Post to the Staff

publius Pillar of the Community United States 877 Posts	Posted Yesterday 11:16 pm "Investing" in collectibles, on the whole, is a foolish idea, because collectibles don't produce income, and can only ever deteriorate in condition. But let's take a look at the world of stamp collecting. After the Second World War, for decades, so many people in the USA saved such a vast quantity of postage stamps, thinking that they would somehow appreciate in value like the rarities of the 19th century, that today (because of the declining number of enthusiasts) they are a drug on the market. Dealers have such vast inventories that you can buy sheets of stamps, from 1948 onward, often at less than face value. And I do exactly that, because I like to send mail with space stamps, and I'm willing to take the time and effort to put 83¢ worth of 1960s 5¢ and 8¢ stamps on an envelope. Vector Ze Pillar of the Community United States 658 Posts	Posted Today 7H 13M ago I've been a coin collector for over 50 years, and I've spent a sizable sum on my collection. But, I NEVER have considered it an investment in the monetary sense. Yeah, it's an investment in my hobby. And as such, it has been worthwhile. A few have increased in value, most haven't...or at least not enough to keep up with inflation. But, that's not the point. It's impossible to reliably predict which of the bunch will beat inflation.
