I bought an expensive slabbed coin from an ebay seller. I'd purchased from this seller before and did not have any particular concern about the coin's authenticity. It is in a PCGS holder and the slab serial number checked out. I received the coin via USPS and signature was required, as expected.

The coin came in some elaborate packaging which apparently is part of an " ebay Authenticity" guarantee program. The slab itself is in a celluloid envelope, sealed with a "void if damaged" label, complete with QR code and hologram. I'm almost afraid to break the seal and take out the slab!

I'm pretty impressed with the overall presentation. Is this a new thing with ebay purchases for slabbed coins? I expect the seller has to pay for this fancy packaging. My purchase included free shipping and apparently free " ebay Authenticity Guarantee" service.

Note: I covered the PCGS slab label with a piece of blue tape. I plan to post the coin itself in the Classic Coin grading section, once I get it out of the eBay-sealed wrapper and take more photos.

Immediate reaction: I think their marketing people should be chastised for not knowing the correct usage of coins vs. coin's. The Authenticity Guarantee belongs to the coin; it is possessive, and the apostrophe is required.

I think this packaging also begs the question: if the wrap says Void If Damaged, and it shows up damaged, what is the buyer meant to do?

That's interesting. I was curious how the final packaging would look. I sold a PCGS-graded Trade dollar a couple weeks ago, and shipped it in a box to their authentication center in California. They processed it and forwarded it on to the buyer within 48 hours, and the buyer received it via USPS a couple days later. That packaging looks nice and official. I suppose the cost of the program is embedded into ebay's overhead structure, since the buyer and seller aren't charged anything for the service (at least not yet).

At 13.75% on a $500+ transaction, ebay can afford it.
