1927 - circulating set of UK coins (original silver designs). The threepence and florin were only issued as Proofs in the new designs that appeared later in the year and were adopted for circulating coins from 1928 to 1926.

1927 UK Wreath Crown - first year of issue, 15,000 minted, all Proofs. The blue on the obverse is toning, not PVC residue!

These are the new UK silver coins released in 1927. Only the shilling was struck for circulation that year - thus there are 'old' and 'new' shillings for 1927. The others were only issued in Proof Sets, but, as can be seen from my threepence and halfcrown, some did get into circulation! The new designs eliminated the problem of 'ghosting', which had bedevilled the 1911-26 coins with their large empty fields coupled with a big portrait of George V on the obverse. The Royal Mint also did something to improve the way they were mixing their 50% silver alloy, as circulated coins from 1928-36 tend not to have the awful yellow-brown coppery stains that many coins from 1920-27 show!

I love the historical context of your posts, Rob! For me the history of what we collect is the best part of numismatics.
