According to Charlton the Bovil[l]e signature variety should have the face plate number under the 25 counter at the upper left or upper right, and the back plate number at the lower right. I can't find any of them. Perhaps it is due to the condition of the note. Does anyone have better eyes?

I would also grade this not[e ] as Good to Very Good but I would appreciate expert opinions.

[I am also wondering what the spots might be on the back. With my loupe it didn't look like a fingerprint - but it didn't look like a stamp either. I'll add some better pictures of that area tomorrow..]

My edits are enclosed in [].

Charlton states that a plate number "MAY be found on notes bearing other signatures".
It doesn't say that they are found on all notes. Yours is one of the notes not showing
a plate number. I agree with your G-VG grade.
Hard to tell what the black marks are, but it is some sort of damage.

I am no expert on grading but I would call this VG+ to Fine. In fact, I'd say its might even be Fine (rather than VG) b/c there is very little design missing (except where there are very visible dark/soiled creases). (This is much better than white paper on the creases which demonstrates the note was washed).

Yours is therefore "original" which is a big plus for its age. The main issue is the heavy toning (darkening of paper from age) & soiling plus the large ink spots (those 2 large spots look like old teller's stamps/possibly cancellation marks to me). I was taught that you don't subtract the grade level but just mention the issues (which subtract value).

Thank you @JimmyD and @walk2dwater for your comments. I did miss the sentence in Charlton that says "may be found" as @JimmyD pointed out.

I promised pictures of the smudges on the back of the note. I am not sure that they are conclusive but I'm leaning toward @walk2dwater's suggestion of ink spots officially applied for some reason. 3 pictures - a close up of the two spots, and one each of and even closer look at the left and right spots.

Hard to say exactly what caused the black spots, they may be some
sort of a tellers stamp but whatever the cause, they would have been
applied after the note was printed so they would be considered damage.
