I have been watching online for reasonably priced early Jefferson nickel proofs to complete my collection. Many of them exhibit the fine parallel lines shown in this PCGS plate coin. Are those lines evidence of a wipe, some other form of cleaning, or just die polishing lines?

Nickel is a very hard metal, making it much more difficult to strike. What you are seeing are called "roller lines" which are artifacts of the planchet production process. You see this a lot on Canadian steel five cent pieces as well. It is much much more apparent on proof/specimen strikes where the lines stick out against the mirror fields.

Can't imagine it is a cleaning.

I hadn't considered roller lines as a possibility! I don't remember seeing them on earlier proofs, but maybe I just never noticed.

since the lines cross over devices I agree with the consensus. Roller Lines. keep in mind that you these are TV photos which enhance the coin. you'll need to decide if the price is right for you and can you live those lines. if you have a pretty much a pristine set, this one might stand out. all depends on your preferences and what you want the set to look like
