Don't have a detector myself yet, unfortunately. All my best finds were sitting right on top of the ground when I came across them...

Many years ago while hunting w/a friend on his land,(next door to the Manassas Battlefield, Va.), my friend hit a strong signal. We pulled up a "SNY" buckle! ("State of New York"). In the same area we found metal buttons, small buckles, unfired musket balls, and even two heal plates,(little horse shoes that protected the heals on a soldiers shoes). It was then that we figured out we had found where a soldier from the 2nd Battle of Manassas,(most likely one of the 5th NY Zouaves), had wondered several hundred yards away from a fight and died, never to be found/buried until then. We turned all this stuff into a NPS Ranger I knew and in a later dig they found alot more of his personnel items. I have not been detecting since then........except when I throw off my wedding ring feeding horses and have to find it before the wife see's it missing! Paul.

One of my best finds is this penny. A friend of my hoarded pennies for years She had amost a large coffee can full I asked her if she would agree if I went through them and if I found any thing good we would spilt 50/50. So she agreed.   And low and behold found this 1955 N.S.F penny Took it to the local coin dealer and was offered $50.00 for it back about 10 years ago So I paid my friend $25.00 and I still have it today as you can see Worth a lot more today. Sorry if the pics are not the best. |

oldest find - 1723 british half penny
best find - 14k 3 diamond ring/ 1ct total
best part of detecting - relaxing and the thrill of the hunt
boy do I miss detecting as much as I used to do........

very nice finds. most of my finds are clad. I've pulled over $200.00 worth out of the ground in 2 years at my favorite park. My oldest coins are 1918 wheat and 1927 mercury. |

1923s Quarter in VF out of a junk box. Paid a dollar for it in about 1985.
I guess the Australian dealer was not across U.S. coins much. He still isn't. His business was, and still is, stamps and Australian NCLT.
At the time, I wasn't into U.S. coins either. I am an ancient and world coins man. It just looked OK, so I just bought it for the world coins part of my collection.
