Coop has some great pics that illustrate the differences between large date and small date.
I don't have them handy, but you'll find them easily with a search. This is clearly a large date.

I'm wishing....I'm afraid of the truth! I would love to find one in this condition.

HoosierDaddy, keep the faith! I am still looking for a small date in the wild also but I am seeing a good run of top quality 1970 S cents here lately. There seems to be a "second great coin jar dump" taking place. A lot of top quality 60's and 70's in my last 4 boxes.

I like that "second great coin jar dump" I think that I missed the first one, so I'm glad I can be part of the second!

I know...I've got about 10 really nice Large date examples like the one above. Just to be safe, I went through my entire stash of 1970S cents last night. Using my usb scope, it took a little while. While using the fullscreen application, there was only a couple of double-takes on my part. Each time there was a little ding on the "9" which changed the direction and made it point to the center of the "7". But with the scope I can see it clearly! The search continues!

Good luck on your quest! A few collectors here have found small dates in circulation. I've never been so lucky.

I see them fancy large dates described on ebay all the time as small dates. I'd rather find one then two then three...and so on in the wild!

You might also take a look at dealer's "bargain bins", where they cut coins out of mint sets. Small dates are easiest to find in mint sets--I have found several.

Now that takes all the fun out of it. I would rather find one in the wild!
