I don't collect world coins, but bought this years ago it was cool 1974 cook Island $50 proof, and a low mintage of about 2500...around 3 OZ'S of silver. thinking of posting on CCF to find a new home, What do you think the fair value for something like this is?

I remember when they were first released through Australian coin dealers onto the local market here; I was not interested in buying one at the time, because I was into ancients (still am). The gold plating obviously adds to the presentation and the perceived value.

I have not seen not even one of them on the local market now for many years, even in auctions. What I do remember of them is that they came in a nicely presented wooden box with certificate.

I am sure that you will find a satisfied buyer for this item. It is a nicely attractive coin. I won't guess a current market value, I would be most probably be wrong anyway. I would prefer to let that be negotiated with your buyer.

Here is a gem one on ebay...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1974-50-COO...360241178896

Its 2.89oz of silver so $89.38 worth of pm. I bring that up as your example looks to have some toning and oxidation which might affect its value somewhat. Regardless, its a big coin. At 57mm, I'm sure you could use it as a signal mirror in an emergency. Found a mintage # of 1202 and selling offers for gem examples vary widely $150~$250.
