macmercury Pillar of the Community United States 5839 Posts	Posted 01/11/2012 01:53 am Proof coins have sharper strikes and mirror like finishes, if you found it in circulation you can still tell the difference by placing next to a same date non proof dime. The chances of finding a no 'S' proof dime in circulation is nil, but one can hope... Report this Post to the Staff

There were a few 1982 dimes minted in Philadelphia without a mintmark. These 82 No P dimes carry a large premium. Report this Post to the Staff
wquinn Pillar of the Community United States 2295 Posts	Posted 01/11/2012 10:55 am Proof isn't a condition, but a manufacturing (minting) process. The dies and planchets are highly polished and the coins are struck at least twice. The mirror finish can't just wear away without destroying most of the coin and by that point it isn't worth anything, but maybe face value at the most. http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_min...rading#Proof The P mintmark wasn't added until 1980, so dimes before then, from Philadelphia, won't have one.
