Oh yeah, the main indicator is the emperor depicted. Like my Honorius I just got. he reigned from 393-423, so my coin had to have been minted around that time period, but my particular example would most likely be later reign, since he looks older tahn on earlier issues. My avatar, a Vespasian, was minted in 74 ad, How do I know exactly? On the reverse, the inscription includes "COS V", which means the fifth year of his reign, and his reign started in 69 AD. 69+5= 74

Oh I see, are you good at determining emperors? Like if I was to send you one, could you tell me what it is?

Rman, you are gonna laugh....when I saw Dolly, I thought of Donny Parton, not Dolly Madison. Oops, I heard of the Dolly Madison.

Yeah, I'm usually pretty good at it, as long as the coin is in identifiable shape. Some emperors even have very distinct busts, so sometimes you could just tell who it is by looking at their portrait on the coin.

I see a dealer at my local coin show has some cheap ones so maybe you can identify them for me?

MY oldest coin? That would be a tie between 2 1787 colonials. What about yours?

A bronze coin of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus, minted around 15-14 BC. I asked because, if you get your first ancient, it's going to be older than your 1787 colonials by at least 1400 years or more! Just something to think about.

I checked the active members list on the main forum page and his name isn't on there, sooo, probably not in front of a comp right now.
