Delaner and Just Carl are RIGHT ON THE MONEY! I'm constantly amazed by collectors who think that coin dealers and pawn shps basically lie, cheat, and steal from collectors or other when they try to sell their coin collections. The prices in Red Book, NN, etc. are NOT what the collector should expect to receive for their coins. Not even close! Those prices are what a collector should expect to pay in the retail market. Dealers are in business to make money BUT they also need happy clients or they don't stay in business.I would suggest that collectors who are not happy with dealers practices are in the wrong hobby or should look elsewhere to purchase coins.

Again, I don't think the issue is that coin dealers and pawn shops make low offers when buying coins. The issue is when coin dealers and pawn shops purport to offer "appraisals" and then either don't have the necessary expertise or else make a low-ball offer instead of a true appraisal. It's one thing to tell a customer how much a coin might be worth on the open market to another collector and quite another thing to say how much you are personally willing to pay for it. The first is an appraisal. The second isn't and shouldn't be advertised as such.
Rest in Peace

I do have to give them credit for their willingness to call in experts and give a fair and honest appraisal before making their low-ball offers.

You have to remember, this is "reality" TV, which is another term for "staged".

Anyone who knows anything about pawn shops can tell you the bulk of transactions are pawns, yet 90% of their business is purchases. Loans just don't make good TV; neither does "I don't have any ID because what I'm offering is stolen".

As far as lowball prices, I've seen them pay much more for stuff than I've sold similar or better items for.

I then will also add, pawnshops maybe aren't the best venue for "appraisals" and that maybe coin shows or Local Coin Shops would be a better venue but I would assume that most but not all people would know this.I know dealers who have had to do "coin appraisals" for people or families with insurance or "Family Trust" issues and are generally happy to do this for a fee. Don't expect something(coin appraisal) for nothing. I say this with NO direspect for Pawn Shop employees or owners.
