I'll have a box of goodies in the mail when I get home again.

Quote: We're all in with this amazing hobby, and we're asking your help to potentially strike the spark inside the kids who will carry the dream into the future. This is a great idea, one that I've considered before, but I think this is the best way to introduce kids to the hobby, as well as a friendly welcome to a show. I sent a few coin types which got me interested in collecting when I was young, including one donated by another collector. If I round up more, I'll send them to you. On the marketing/logistics side of things--will you be advertising this YN giveaway? And, how will you handle a long line of adults picking up coins for "their kids"--even if they're childless? Questions I've pondered myself over a YN giveaway.

At the New Hampshire Coin Expo held last July in Manchester there was forum conducted just for the kids with giveaways of coins and supplies. If there will be a a similar forum in Philly in August, perhaps the CCF might co-ordinate its effort to teach with this forum. Just an idea. If not, then the CCF needs to make sure that their generosity will be advertised, promoted and in every way supported by the organizers of the event. Idea two: Promote the availability of "experts" to help the kids identify the goodies that they have received. While simply giving the stuff to kids is a wonderful gesture, it must be, in my opinion, accompanied by the sharing of knowledge of the CCF members who will be in attendance.

I threw a small box of goodies in the mail yesterday. It seems like kids really like coins with animals on them, so there are some Buffalo nickels in there, among other things. Also, I remember being particularly fascinated by error coins as a kid. I didn't have a lot to include so I was bidding on a lot of off-center cents, but got outbid. But maybe somebody else has a few nice errors they can include. Quote: Promote the availability of "experts" to help the kids identify the goodies that they have received. For at least a few of my items it might not be obvious why the coin is particularly interesting.

Dunno if ANA does the same stupid promo, but they used to buy a half dozen 14d cents and circulate them, along with some news articles. I suspect most of them are still sitting in someone's change jar. Much better: turn loose a bag of wheat cents, getting general interest, and let ppl find their way to the show.

If they have kids and want to get them some coins they need to go home and get them. Of course this is just my opinion as I will not be there

I agree. The whole experience of actually having the kids interact is part of the "getting them hooked" thing. This should be reserved for kids 16 and under. Just my opinion too.

I just re-visited this post today and I would like to give a few more thoughts: 1) If the "kid" is not at the show then he or she probably is not interested in coins. My own, personal agenda is to promote coin collecting as a family hobby. Parents, sadly too few, bring their children to these shows and together they share in the adventure. Age should not in itself be the determining factor. It is the kid and a parent, grandparent or other adult who, together, share the joy of the hunt. 2) It sounds as though you will have a big bag of wheat cents and dateless Indian Head/Buffalo nickels. But what about the silver coins? Yeah, I know that they are held as bullion, but I have an idea. Every "new" collector, as he or she reaches into the bag, would be invited to submit his or her name in a drawing. The prizes would be silver coins. Not of great value, but of interest. If this idea is acceptable, I will start it off by donating a couple of Seated Liberty and Barber dimes. Nothing special. Actually, quite undesirable to a seasoned collector. But very interesting to a kid just starting out. And I think that this presence at a major show is just dandy: the up-close-and-personal experience of a coin show and the Internet support as a follow-up. We live in a new century and have to adapt to the times. I'd like to support the effort. Matthew

I like this idea. Wish I could be there but I'm a little far north and have stuff going on. My question is-will there actually be kids at the show to promote to? When I go to coin shows I never see many kids, usually I'm one of the 2 or 3 there.

This is a huge show, bigger than Long Beach here on the West coast, and kids are always wandering the bourse, usually with their dad at Long Beach. We might be able to have some announcements over the loud speaker directing them to our table ;-)

Could you set up a computer to access ccf for questions with no immediate answers at the table?

If possible, biggfredd, this would be ideal. Imagine, flesh and blood people handing out the coins while those of us around the country man, or WOMAN, the site to answer the questions of kids. Now THAT would be a true 21st Century Coin event. I can handle the Barber coins. Now, we need specialists in every coin series. Where do I sign up?

You can plan on that; we've already discussed what it'll take and between Bobby, Susan and myself there will certainly be online connection live from the show. Just to do what I'm going to do there will require two different laptops, and if wifi isn't available we all have the ability to tether to cellphones. At the very least, I'm going to liveblog the show. Heck, I'm trying to get 'em to do a podcast.
