I collect coins because I enjoy the history behind them, the artistic movements and technological advances that they represent, and the pathways that they can open to further learning on multiple topics such as economics, political science, and geography.

That some are worth more than face value, and may go up in price, is just icing on the cake.

I collect for the history... Always say to myself "could this FE cent been in the pocket of a civel war soldier"? "this lincoln wheat was minted when my father was born"... something about that that makes "investment seem ancillary...

Of course I do not like to do anything stupid with my money :)

I just love things with historical value to them. Being worth a fair amount is nice, but I do not intend to sell my coins (although I do sell a few when I get an upgrade or duplicate). I like antiques and things that have historical relevance. I enjoy collecting things from days gone by, it has spilled over into paper currency, stamps, antiques, etc...

I can't afford most of the nice collectible coins so I stick with buillion types mostly, if it comes in the form of a coin then great. Still, that's the approach I've taken while slowly learning the numismatic side of things.

6. They are cheaper than the cars that I want to collect, and store easier, and I don't have to polish them, etc...

This may sound strange, but I frequently wish the price of silver would drop so I can buy more coins. Not for investment but for the fun of it! History is very important also.

Every time I hold an old coin, I wonder "whose pocket has this been in?" It's cool to see coins from the time of our forefathers!

Oh, I collect because I think coins look cool, they are a cool part of our history, they have been held by MANY people of all walks of life, and they can be an investment :)

How many people can say that their hobby is also an investment?

No matter how much spare money I have there is something I can pick up and enjoy. Besides being affordable as I like the history and sense of achievement in doing what I set out to do.

Why do I collect? Fun, mostly with the undertone of if I need to, I can sell what I have. I would rather not, but if it came to not making essentials (kids eating, etc) then I'll do it and not look back.

I think anyone who has been collecting, and especially those of us who go through rolls have had moments where we have had a coin turn up that made us stop in our tracks, catch our breath and in an awed whisper say 'holey moley!' I have had a few myself.

Only collect coins for fun. No intentions of selling any, ever.

Back in the early 70's I received a metal detector as a gift. The first thing I found was a SLQ on our front lawn. I was awestruck by it. So I was hooked at 13 years old. I have considered the value many times but it has only been secondary to the history and wow factor of the coins.
