I started a coin a while ago at $35 (Which is around the value of the coin, it was probably worth $40-$45) but the auction ended with no bidders. So I re-listed the coin again at $30, the coin ended once again without any bidders.

When I decided to start the coin at $0.99, it got a lot more attention, and ended up selling for $50! $15 More then I was originally trying to get for it.

I've done this a few times with very good results on coins below $50 FMV. Right now, I have a couple coins on ebay with values well over $300. I would not even think about it for these coins. Did that once, lost serious $$.

Interesting calendar. I wonder why Thursdays are a good day to end an auction.

I find that I now prefer to sell using the buy it now + make offer option. Ask high and work out a price with interested buyers.

I find myself tending to ignore these. But your post made good sense to me. I'm going to start looking at these a little more seriously.

I've been on ebay this morning looking at the BUY IT NOW/MAKE OFFER auctions, specifically Ike dollars. One thing I'm noticing is that most of these have more than one coin available in the auction. So, you don't get to see the exact coin you'll be getting. I don't like that.

For those of you that buy in these auctions when you make an offer on the coin do you request a picture of exactly the coin you'll be getting?

When I purchase a coin on ebay yes, I want it to be the exact coin pictured, and there has to be a clear return policy in place otherwise, I won't buy.

I noticed that too, multiple coins available, may not get the one pictured, no returns...bah-bye!

I don't accept return for the coins I sell I don't want someone switching out coins then returning them for a refund if people don't like it too bad don't buy from me. Most of my coins come directly from mints so I know they are not fakes.
Rest in Peace

Always been true. Unofficial start of the weekend, in some quarters.

I've just started on ebay and I've made my share of mistakes. I've been listing for the most part with .99 cent starts with a fixed price for shipping that is a little on the low side. Example I will ask for a couple of bucks if I believe my costs will be less then $10.00
A note of warning to newbes like me. I had some collectible silver posted, scrap weight around 7 - 8 ounces, in two separate auctions. In my ads I offer to combine shipping (I'm good with this). One of the items trending all over the place for prices of over $100.00 to as high as $250.00. I felt safe starting at .99 cents. One guy won the 2 auctions, so I combined shipping (fair is fair). Here comes the killer....he is located in Taiwan, he paid less than melt for retail value of around $300.00 to $400.00 and I got nuked on shipping. I am happy for him, but I'm selling my collection to buy my kids a pool. Tough lesson for me.

It hurts man, it hurts. All I can hope for is some positive feed back. I am sorry to any international buyers out there but for now my .99 cent auctions will be limited to Canada and the USA.
cheers

Thanks for this info. I too am considering selling on ebay and I think the biggest holdback for me is how to calculate shipping. I would like to have the buyer pay shipping if possible but feel it would be best to have an upfront price for that. But how does it work if you are shipping to different locations?
